Tonight at dinner, Mrs. Savage asked her son Jack to say a prayer before the meal. Little Jack — who is in first grade — bowed his head and said, very softly, very reverently:
God, please bless this food. And bless my mommy and daddy. And bless John so he will drive home safe. And let John stay with us a long, long time. Amen.”
I almost cried.
Dear God,
Bless Jack and Emily and Ben and Annie and Hyrum for letting me stay in their place while I look for a new apartment in Carlsbad. Mr. Twain once said, ‘Friends, like fish, start to smell after three days.’ Well, it looks like I’ll be staying more like thirty, so please bless them for their patience and generosity. And bless Jack, Emily and Ben who remind me why I wanted kids.”
