How U.S. Fell Under the Spell of ‘Curveball’

(from the LA Times)

BERLIN — The German intelligence officials responsible for one of the most important informants on Saddam Hussein’s suspected weapons of mass destruction say that the Bush administration and the CIA repeatedly exaggerated his claims during the run-up to the war in Iraq.

Five senior officials from Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service, or BND, said in interviews with The Times that they warned U.S. intelligence authorities that the source, an Iraqi defector code-named Curveball, never claimed to produce germ weapons and never saw anyone else do so…

The German authorities, speaking about the case for the first time, also said that their informant suffered from emotional and mental problems. “He is not a stable, psychologically stable guy,” said a BND official who supervised the case. “He is not a completely normal person,” agreed a BND analyst.

The American Majority

Gen Con Report soon. In the meantime, what do the American people think? You might be surprised.

According to recent Gallup polls…

Only 40% of Americans think Bush is doing a good job. (link)

His favorables are at 41% (56% unfavorable. (link)

When asked “Do you think Bush can be an effective president during his last three years in office, or that he won’t be able to get much done for the rest of his second term?”, only 36% thought he could be effective. (link)

Only 35% of Americans believe Bush is doing a good job in Iraq. 54% believe going to Iraq was a bad idea. And only 38% believe going to Iraq was “worth it.” (link)

I provide these statistics for only one reason. They prove that the claim “The majority of Americans support the President” is false. No other information should be gleaned from these polls.

Seeing the Light

It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I can’t tell you about the sign or the grip, but I can’t wait to tell you about all the rest.

Well, some of it. 😉

I am smitten,
beguiled,
bewitched,
captivated,
enraptured,
mesmerized,
spellbound,
enamored,
and ensorcelled.

Some might say, “She must be mine.”

I say, “I must be hers.”

Poll: Most Americans Doubt Bush’s Honesty

WASHINGTON – Most Americans say they aren’t impressed by the ethics and honesty of the Bush administration, already under scrutiny for its justifications for an unpopular war in Iraq and its role in the leak of a covert CIA officer’s identity.

Almost six in 10 — 57 percent — said they do not think the Bush administration has high ethical standards and the same portion says
President Bush is not honest, an AP-Ipsos poll found.

Texas Bans Marriage and Kansas Redefines Science

Texas voters have passed a constitutional amendment that bans same-sex marriage and civil unions.

But the new group, Save Texas Marriage, is bringing a new message into the fray. They say that because of flawed language, Proposition 2, promoted by supporters as an effort to protect traditional marriage, would in fact ban marriage as we know it.

The actual language of the Proposition:

“The constitutional amendment providing that marriage in this state consists only of the union of one man and one woman and prohibiting this state or a political subdivision of this state from creating or recognizing any legal status identical or similar to marriage.”

Meanwhile…

“At the risk of re-igniting the same heated nationwide debate it sparked six years ago, the Kansas Board of Education approved new public school science standards Tuesday that cast doubt on the theory of evolution.

“In addition, the board rewrote the definition of science, so that it is no longer limited to the search for natural explanations of phenomena.”

Friends, when you ask me why I think religion is dangerous… just take a look around. You’ll see why.
