Let’s look at this logically for a moment.

Okay, let’s put a law in place that forbids people from a performing a religious act. This is not an advocacy for prayer in schools (the law forbids people from forcing others to pray — the exact opposite of what most people think “prayer in school” means). No, I’m talking about a law that forbids people from performing a specific religious ritual. Like confession. Or bahmitzva (my apologies for my spelling — I’m Irish). Or taking the long walk to Mecca. Let’s pass a law that forbids a specific religious ritual. Why? Because some people do not have the right to perform that ritual. They simply don’t. They don’t have the right to perform this ritual because… well, because we say so.

A ritual like… oh, let’s say… marriage.

Some people have the right to perform this religious ritual and some people do not. Let’s pass a Constitutional law that forbids some people to participate in the religious ritual of marriage.

Think that’s a bad idea? So do I. Good. Let’s move on.

Next point: let’s pass a law that says some people don’t have the right to enter into legal agreements. Like… buying land. Or a car. And why? Is it based on their credit rating? Is it based on a criminal record? No. Just because we think they shouldn’t. A law that says some people don’t have the righ to enter into a legal contract.

A legal contract like… oh, let’s say… marriage.

Some people have the right to sign this piece of paper and some people don’t. Let’s pass a Constitutional law that forbids some people from entering legally binding contracts based soley on a value judgement of their character.

Think that’s a bad idea? So do I. Good. Let’s move on.

Next point: let’s pass a law that some people have less rights than others. Plain and simple. All men are NOT equal in the eyes of the law. Some are second class citizens. And let’s pass laws that dictate the right and proper way to have sex. You and your sweetie wanna get a little kinky tonight? It’s a crime, your neighbors complain, the cops show up, you go to jail.

You do not have the right to choose a life partner we do not condone.
You do not have the right to enjoy sex with that life partner in a way we do not condone.
You do not have the right to marry that life partner.
You do not have the right to enjoy the same legal status with that life partner that we do.

I honestly cannot believe people elected to the House and Senate are considering passing a law that says, with no ambiguities whatsoever…

SOME PEOPLE ARE LESS EQUAL THAN OTHERS.

I’m ashamed of my country. Honestly ashamed. I’d burn a flag if I owned one. Just to show you how fucking pissed off I am.
