“The superintendent made the decision for three primary reasons, Hansen said. First, Halloween parties and parades waste valuable classroom time. Second, some families can’t afford costumes and the celebrations thus can create embarrassment for children.
Both of those reasons seemed sensible to the parents who spoke to ABC News affiliate KOMO-TV in Seattle. But the district’s third reason left some Puyallup parents shaking their heads.
The district said Halloween celebrations and children dressed in Halloween costumes might be offensive to real witches.”
Now, I’ve got mixed feelings about this one. One one hand, I don’t give even a single shit about offending people.
On the other hand, would it be acceptable to wear a Crucified Jesus costume? Or does that offend your sensibilities?
I once wore a “sucide Kurt” costume. I dressed up as Kurt Cobaine with my face blown off and a suicide note pinned to my chest. Pretty offensive to some, but damn funny to others.
Are witches offended by the green-skinned, warty, big-nosed Halloween stereotype? My ex-wife, a practicing witch, was not. Does that mean all witches aren’t offended? Hell, no.
But, I think, the same people who are offended by wicked witch Halloween costumes would be the same people offended by a crucified Jesus costume.
Don’t know. That’s a tough one…
… although I may be looking into getting a big cross and some nails for this October 31st…
