In the Gospel of Mark (the oldest of the canoptic Gospels and theoretically, the most authentic), after Simon takes the cross for Jesus, the person carrying the cross is never named again, but referred to only as “he.” Thus, it is entirely possible that Simon was cricified, not Jesus.
