Darrell: which is why adults 25-40 are flocking to college radio…
Darrell: they’re sick of the Clear Channel status quo garbage
Darrell: just like people got sick of network tv and started moving to cable during the past 5-10 years
Me: Yes.
Darrell: now, cable holds a market share of more than 50%
Me: That’s because network tv suxxors.
Darrell: right now, the RIAA’s labels sell something like 80-85% of all music
Darrell: but that number’s falling every day
Me: If something suxxors, no matter how hard you push it at the public, they’ll reject it.
Me: Like Britney’s steadily failing record sales.
Darrell: downloading allows people to educate and decide for themselves
Darrell: the labels don’t want you to think for yourself
Darrell: because it renders all their promotion useless
Me: Waits had his new album streaming for three months from Anti- records. He wanted people to listen to it.
Me: I think that’s a good thing to do.
Me: Rush had four of their songs on their website, too.
Darrell: yeah, you’re gonna see a lot more artists doing that…
Darrell: they realize that, if you’re outside of the Clear Channel monopoly, streaming your record is a good equalizer
Darrell: about a year ago, Matador streamed Cat Power’s You Are Free for a month before it came out…
Darrell: now, keep in mind, Cat Power had never sold more than a 100 thousand records in her previous five releases
Darrell: the week You Are Free came out, it debuted at #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart… she sold, like, 75 thousand the first week
Me: good for her!
Darrell: and was on Letterman two weeks later
