When I was a boy, I’d pull books off my father’s shelf. That’s how I was introduced to Asimov, Heinein, Clarke, and Niven. Later, when I raided the public library for books, I discovered Tanith Lee, Lovecraft, Vance, and of course, Tolkein.

On Wednesday night, I drove out to my folks’ apartment, the one they’re staying in while they wait for their new house in Vegas to get built. I get out there and my dad’s got the big deluxe copy of The Two Towers. It’s funny. I took my dad to see Fellowship of the Rings. He loved it. And there I was, giving my dad a copy of a book off my shelf.

Then, on Thanksgiving, we go see Master and Commander. Another book off my shelf. I tell him I’ll loan him any PO’B stuff he wants to read.

Full circle.
