Distantly in Love

For jane and savannah jane

Payphones all were ringing as the crowd went roarin’ by
Lovely dancers swayin’ to an island lullaby
Beside the southern ocean taking stock of what’s to be
Writing you this letter that you’ll probably never see

But I can’t help but be
Ruled by inconsistencies
Not unique just distantly in love

Tried to phone from paris thinking things could be arranged
Me and you would rendezvous but I found your number changed
So I drove to san remo where the crazy painter dwells
Toasted our old photograph still up there on his shelf

But I can’t help but be
Ruled by my antiquities
Not unique just distantly in love

I can’t be the one to fill
Your times and all your places
I can’t be the one to fill
Your blanks and empty spaces

I heard it from a friend of ours I saw in timber bay
You had a new lover who had stolen you away
That could be the reason that I never got in touch
May present slight problems if he loves you half as much

As I who can’t help but be
Ruled by my antiquities
Not unique just distantly in love
You know I can’t help but be
Part of my own philosophies
Not unique just distantly in love

(Jimmy Buffett)

Someone’s BD CD, Part Deux

I’m listening to it right now.

The CD burner I borrowed was giving me problems, so I had to arrange for another one. It’s done, I’m giving it a test drive, and it should be in your hands very soon.

“I can’t help but be
Ruled by inconsistancies
Not unique just distantly in love
I can’t help but be
Part of my own philosophies
Not unique just distantly in love”

The Lady’s Not For Sale

Kristofferson/Pugh

She longed to be a lady
But she was just a child
But where the grass was greener,
Lord, she done her growin’ wild

And she tried to spread her tender wings
And never left the ground
So she turned to dreams at sweet sixteen
And woke up comin’ down

But she tries in her way climbin’ higher
And she dies each time she fails
So give her a home or leave her alone
The lady’s not for sale

She ain’t ashamed to show her soul
She’ll sell it for a song
But free don’t mean she’s easy
Or right for goin’ wrong

So let her be the lady, Lord
She want’s so bad to be
And let her win a gentle man
That she was born to please

‘Cause she tries climbing higher
And she dies each time she fails
So give her a home or leave her alone
The lady’s not for sale

A Sunday Game

What to run?

Pendragon
Heroic fantasy in the Arthurian Age. A great game. The system is a bit antiquated and needs some tweaking, but many of the concepts were vital to the design of L5R. I’d run it very differently than suggested, making it a bit more accessable to the “average gamer.” It’s very specific in what it does, and does it better than any other game around. But, like rich chocolate, you have to take it in small doses. Maybe not.

Ars Magica
One of my favorite games of all time. (Or “favourite” as my employers insist.) Fantasy roleplaying in historic Europe. It’s a power gamer’s wet dream, requires a bit of investing from the players; after all, you make three characters to create the Covenant. However, AM does have the BEST MAGIC SYSTEM EVER. A high contender.

7th Sea
Playing this one has reminded me why I like it so much. It’s much more light-hearted than it first appears, which is to my advantage. And who doesn’t like pirates? However, I think the setting might be a bit too heavy for the group I have in mind. A lot to learn.

Cthulhu
Another system I’d have to tweak just a little — it has the same problems as Pendragon. Also, I’d have to run a Delta Green-style adventure… otherwise, everyone dies. Another heavy setting that quickly degenerates into comedy if not handled properly.

Dune
I really don’t know the world at all, and that’s a bad thing because Pop Tart does.

Vampire
My best game, I think, but too heavy for the group.

Okay… I think my best bet so far is Ars Magica. We’ll see.

Any suggestions?

Got a telegram from the God of Simple Things…

Everything Is Different Now

(Don Henley/Scott F. Crago/Timothy Drury)

I hate to tell you this, but I’m very, very happy
And I know that’s not what you’d expect from me at all
I’m not the kind to smile and bow out gracefully
I always wanted to take it to the wall

But I found somebody with a heart as big as Texas
I found an angel with the golden wings
She saw me down here in the dark somehow
And everything is different now

Yeah, I miss the old crowd sometimes
And the wild, wild nights of running
You know, a starving soul can’t live like that for long
You go around in circles that just keep getting smaller
You wake up one morning and half your life is gone
I got so tired of that; I got so lonely
I dropped down and I called out to heaven
“Send me someone to love.”
And heaven shot back, “You get the love that you allow.”
And everything is different now

Oh, and it’s sweet to know
The wisdom that living brings
Since I got a telegram from the god of simple things
She said, “I don’t care what you do for a living.”
She said, “I don’t care what kind of car you drive.”
“All I want to know right now is what do you believe in
And what it means to you to be alive
Will you stand here in this fire with me?
Are you ready for another life?”
So I bit that bullet and I took that vow
And everything is different now
Everything is different now
